About Westmount Golf & Country Club

Vision

Graced by our premier golf course, we will be a welcoming, vibrant community of members enjoying Westmount Golf & Country Club’s excellence in sporting and social activities.

Club History

On the 17th of June, 1929, twenty members of the Grand River Golf Club met to consider acquiring land for a new eighteen-hole golf course. The late Herbert M. Snyder acted as chairman of the meeting. Mr. Robert M. MacFarlane made a survey of recently acquired land, and soon the adjoining properties of Mr. E. O. Weber and Mr. Howard Snider were acquired and surveyed for the new course.

The course architect was Mr. Stanley Thompson. Much of the course was cut from bush and swamp, requiring hard, dedicated labour to open up the new fairways. Memberships for the new course became highly sought after as construction continued, assuring the Directors an ultimately successful venture.

Westmount Golf and Country Club opened its greens to members in the summer of 1931. The late W.R. (Bill) Bricker was the first Club Captain, Mr. Cammy Seagram the first Club Champion (and repeated several times in the following years), and Mr. David Croal the first professional. The first official Board of Directors and Officers was as follows:

• President – H.M. Snyder
• Vice President – T.W. Seagram
• Secretary – Fred W. Snyder
• Directors – Reinhold A. Lang, A.W. Ausgustine, R.M. MacFarlane

The Officers and Directors who carried the financial and physical burdens of the Club in its formative years deserve our unbounded thanks. They had a myriad of difficulties to overcome, but their superb planning and years of dedication produced a lasting, world-class golf course.

A six-sheet Curling Rink was constructed in 1962, and additional locker facilities, dining and lounge rooms were soon added to house the burgeoning membership. In 1975 extensive renovations to the Club House took place. A new dining room was added next to the patio, and below this a games room was constructed.

In 1977, clay tennis courts were added to the Westmount facilities. Four courts of superb quality and a most enthusiastic group of members turned this new activity into a distinct success.

A collection of Westmount memorabilia is available at the University of Waterloo library. To learn more about the Club's history, click here.
